How to Technology ensures sustainability

BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a process and not an end in itself. Through this process, the building travels with it and is developed from the wishes, needs and requirements of the client (concept phase) to an optimized virtual building (design phase) to a perfectly functioning building (exploitation phase). This process is in full development, whereby all kinds of smart connections are being realized between BIM and the simulation, calculation and monitoring tools. In the above-mentioned European research initiatives, we work closely with our European partners on innovations to optimize the BIM process.

For example, in the STREAMER project we helped with the design optimization for the expansion of the Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem. During the preliminary design phase we conducted a pilot of the preparation of spatial plans. To ensure the most efficient layout possible, we developed and used a new design process with software.

In a configurator we have indicated how many rooms with which function the customer requires and wants: from the number of operating and rest rooms to receptions and restaurants. Naturally appropriate within the legal requirements. The configurator works on the basis of labels - functions, wishes / needs of the customer and legal requirements - and uses an automated algorithm.

Various scenarios followed from this configurator, after which we analyzed the technical costs and energy consumption of each scenario. The architect, who focused on aesthetic value, also contributed to this. Ultimately, this resulted in the most optimal design. The expansion of this hospital has now been completed and we have received mostly positive reactions from users.

In the INSITER project we are also continuously looking for innovations to improve our BIM process. We use augmented reality to support commissioning and inspection processes. Inspectors are provided with standardized process instructions and are provided with relevant know-how and information. Commissioning managers behind the desk monitor the construction (inspections) and make adjustments if necessary. In the (communication) process, augmented reality solutions ensure higher efficiency. Inspection results, observed deviations and any adjustments are immediately implemented in the BIM model. This process makes it possible to realize buildings without errors and to increase performance during use.

These are just 2 examples of the many innovations that we add to the BIM process. We are convinced that this approach provides control over the entire life cycle of a building. The power of this type of European research project is to develop and validate high-quality knowledge in demo projects. This promotes innovations in construction and ensures a higher construction quality. Investments in these types of projects pay for themselves in new commercial assignments and high (er) appreciation from our clients and cooperation partners. In short: innovation is our distinctive character.
